Conservative Republican congressional candidate Katie Arrington has announced her third major campaign pledge – she will decline congressional healthcare and retirement benefits, when elected to represent South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.
“I will not accept Congressional healthcare or retirement,” Arrington announced on her Facebook page. “I will reject these perks for as long as you allow me to serve you in Congress.”
Arrington explained that her first three campaign pledges highlight a major difference between herself and her opponent, Mark Sanford.
“It’s time to replace self-serving, longtime politician Mark Sanford with a leader committed to public service,” said Arrington. “I am running for one reason: to truly serve the people of South Carolina. Look no further for proof of this fact than my first three campaign pledges: donating $125,000 annually of my congressional salary to Lowcountry charities, term-limiting myself to eight years in Congress, and declining congressional healthcare and retirement benefits. Clearly I am not running for Congress for the money, the benefits, or to become a career politician like Mark Sanford; I am running to serve our community.”
In her campaign launch, Arrington announced that she would only accept the average annual household income of the congressional district, $52,000, and donate the remainder of the salary annually to charities in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, and Dorchester Counties.
“I believe that, in order to properly represent a district, one must truly feel and understand how the people of the district live and work,” Arrington said in her announcement speech.
At the end of November, Arrington announced on a Facebook live video that she would limit herself to serving four terms in Congress.
“I believe strongly that, if congressmen knew their time in Washington was limited, many would actually get things done,” Arrington said at the time.
Arrington summarized her pledges further, “We need a real change in leadership to solve the problems facing South Carolina residents. Mark Sanford has gone Washington and is a product of the broken system; I am an agent of change committed to public service. Self service or public service is the decision to be made in the Republican primary.”
Arrington will put the people of South Carolina first, ending the tenure of a lifelong politician who is living off the taxpayers

ARRINGTON ANNOUNCEMENT REMARKS
Good morning and thank you all for being here.
Before I begin I want to first acknowledge some special people here with us today …and make some positive news.
As we begin to make this journey together, it’s important to note there are many others who believe we need a NEW, stronger voice representing this region and our state in Congress.
I want to acknowledge and thank Speaker of the House Jay Lucas for joining me here today! I want to thank the Majority Leader of the South Carolina House, Representative Gary Simrill for being here today! And, I want to thank our former statewide South Carolina Republican Party First Vice Chair, former Charleston County Republican Party Chair and current State Representative Lin Bennett for being here today!
All of these people are longtime leaders in the conservative movement, and their support speaks volumes about this campaign.
There are also a number of elected officials, business leaders and community leaders with us today. If you all would, please wave your hand.
But… what we have here is a LARGE group of elected Conservative leaders, of grassroots and elected Republican leaders, of concerned citizens – all of us in this room – who know we need a NEW STRONGER VOICE in Congress. THANK YOU!
As you all know, my family means everything to me. And, I am grateful some of my family members are here also with me today for this important announcement. My children, grandchildren (yes he is adorable), my mom and sisters because family is such an essential part of who I am. They all provided me the foundation and fuel to be the woman I am today.
While I will not introduce every member of my family here today by name, I do want introduce my husband, Rob. Not only is Rob an extremely hard-working businessman, who has created lots of jobs in the Lowcountry, he is also my rock and best friend.
Small business is the cornerstone for job creation, and Rob and I live it every day.
We understand small business is the cornerstone of this nation and helps drive the economy.
I also want to show my appreciation for my daughter and son-in-law who are serving our nation in the armed forces.
I will ALWAYS, ALWAYS stand behind our troops in uniform and honor our Veterans who served.
I want to be very clear and I am confident the majority of voters in our District agree we need a new voice in Congress.
Because: Mark Sanford is more focused on getting himself on CNN than he is focused on the needs and concerns of our region.
Simply put: Mark Sanford has become Washington.
Mark Sanford has spent decades living off the government… living off a government paycheck.
Mark Sanford has literally made millions off the taxpayers as he has become a professional politician.
We need a new voice, a stronger voice. And, that’s why I, Katie Arrington, am here today to announce that I am running to serve the people of South Carolina in Congress.
I am a businesswoman and, together with my husband, we have both been job creators.
I’ve served as a military defense contractor and a military wife and mother. I have been, and I continue to be, a dedicated public servant.
I am running to make South Carolina and her people the priority, not a political career.
My goal is not to become a nationally-known politician – for the right reasons – or in Mark Sanford’s case – all the wrong reasons.
I want to be a Member of Congress you can be proud of. My goal is to fight for South Carolina and her people.
With the support of people in this room and conservatives all over this District, I will help drain the swamp and send Mark Sanford home from the beltway.
With your support, I will fight for South Carolina businesses and job creators; I will fight to continue to grow our economy.
I will work to improve transportation with action, not words.
I will always stand by our Constitution, including the right-to-life and the protection of our 2nd Amendment.
With your support, I will ensure our military leaders, and men and women in uniform, get the support they need and deserve.
I will ensure our Veterans who sacrificed for our freedoms and our Senior Citizens who built this great nation we have today will always be a priority.
As I said earlier, I am a military mom. I work in the defense industry. And, for many years, I have worked to raise money to support our active-duty military and veterans. At this time, I would like to ask all in attendance who are active-duty or veterans to please wave, so we can give you the proper thanks you all deserve.
There are some across the District who do not know me yet and may be asking, does Katie Arrington have the fight in her to do these things – the fight to take on and defeat a professional politician? The fight to change the way things are done in Washington?
The fight and courage to stand with President Trump on pushing for conservative reforms, not bash him to leftist cheerleaders, especially those watching CNN?
The short answer is, like many people in Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Beaufort and Colleton Counties, I have always been a fighter. I’ve never backed down from a challenge that I know is worth the fight.
When my life took some difficult turns and I was living paycheck to paycheck, working multiple jobs – I kept fighting to provide for my family.
When the doctor told me that my son had special needs shortly after birth, I kept my faith and fought to do whatever it took to keep my son safe and happy.
When the establishment did all they could to defeat me in my state legislature race, I fought back and won.
When I was told time and time again not to mess with the political power structure in Columbia, I fought back and introduced legislation to limit the length of time one could chair a committee and and hold real power… because some – not all – but some longtime politicians forget who they are fighting for.
I fought hard on all of these things because I know they were right. To the people of South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, I will always fight for you!
Again, there are some across the District who do not know me yet and may ask, how can we trust that I will not become Washington like Mark Sanford has become?
To answer that, I am making another announcement today:
After I am elected to Congress, I will only accept the average annual household income of the 1st Congressional District. Currently that is $52,000. With the other $125,000 of the Congressional salary Mark Sanford pockets year after year, I will donate it to local charities in Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, Beaufort and Colleton Counties.
I will continue to follow this protocol for as long as you allow me to be your elected representative and public servant because I believe that, in order to properly represent a district, one must truly feel and understand how the people of the district live and work.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am not running for Congress for the money, for the title, for the prestige, and certainly not to get facetime on CNN.
I don’t need a job. I want to serve our community.
My goal in life is not national fame – or again to bash the President. That’s not what we want in OUR Member of Congress. That’s what’s called going Washington.
I am running for Congress for one reason: to truly SERVE the people of South Carolina.
I thank each and every one of you for being here today to join me, as we start this campaign. I thank you all in advance for your support, your prayers and your votes. And, I encourage you, present here, and all watching please go to www.VoteKatieArrington.com, learn more about me and my platform, and join our efforts.
Again, that is VoteKatieArrington.com.
God Bless you, all! God Bless our great State of South Carolina! And, God Bless the great United States of America!
